Types of Bilirubin: Total Bilirubin – Sum of direct and indirect bilirubin Direct (Conjugated) Bilirubin – Processed by the liver, water-soluble Indirect (Unconjugated) Bilirubin – Not yet processed by the liver Normal Ranges (may vary by lab): Total: 0.3 – 1.2 mg/dL Direct: 0.1 – 0.3 mg/dL Indirect: Total – Direct Used To: Diagnose liver diseases (e.g., hepatitis, cirrhosis) Evaluate jaundice in newborns and adults Check bile duct blockage or hemolytic anemia This test is usually part of a liver function panel.
