Liver Faction Tests
Service Description
A Liver Function Test (LFT) is a group of blood tests that assess the health and function of your liver. These tests measure various enzymes, proteins, and substances in the blood to evaluate how well your liver is working and to identify potential liver damage or disease. Here are the key components typically included in an LFT: 1. **Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)**: An enzyme found mainly in the liver. Elevated levels can indicate liver inflammation or damage, such as from hepatitis or fatty liver disease. 2. **Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)**: An enzyme found in the liver, heart, and muscles. Elevated levels can indicate liver damage, but because AST is also found in other tissues, it is not as specific to liver damage as ALT. 3. **Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)**: An enzyme related to the bile ducts. Elevated levels can indicate problems with the bile ducts or liver diseases such as biliary obstruction or cholestasis. 4. **Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT)**: An enzyme that helps to identify liver disease, especially bile duct issues. Elevated levels can be a marker of liver damage or alcohol abuse. 5. **Total Bilirubin**: Bilirubin is a substance produced from the breakdown of red blood cells. Elevated levels can indicate liver problems or conditions that affect red blood cell breakdown, such as jaundice or bile duct obstruction. 6. **Direct Bilirubin**: The portion of total bilirubin that is conjugated or processed by the liver. Elevated levels of direct bilirubin can suggest liver or bile duct issues. 7. **Albumin**: A protein made by the liver that helps maintain blood volume and pressure. Low levels of albumin can indicate liver disease or other conditions that affect protein production. 8. **Total Protein**: Measures the total amount of protein in the blood, including albumin and globulins. Abnormal levels can indicate liver disease or other health issues. **Preparation for the Test:** - **Fasting**: You might be asked to fast for 8-12 hours before the test to ensure accurate results, especially if the test includes measurements of cholesterol or glucose as well. **Interpreting Results:** - **Normal Ranges**: These can vary slightly depending on the laboratory and your age, sex, and health status, but typical ranges are: - **ALT**: 7-56 units per liter (U/L) - **AST**: 10-40 U/L - **ALP**: 44-147 U/L - **GGT**: 9-48 U/L - **Total Bilirubin**: 0.1-1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) - **Direct Bilirubin**: 0.1-0.3 mg/dL -
