Sodium and Potassium Blood Test: The sodium and potassium test measures the levels of these two essential electrolytes in your blood. They help maintain fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle activity, including the heart. Sodium (Na⁺) Normal range: 135 – 145 mEq/L Helps control blood pressure, fluid balance, and nerve signals Low sodium (hyponatremia): May cause confusion, weakness, or seizures High sodium (hypernatremia): Can cause dehydration and neurological symptoms Potassium (K⁺) Normal range: 3.5 – 5.0 mEq/L Vital for heart rhythm, muscle contractions, and nerve signals Low potassium (hypokalemia): Can lead to muscle cramps, weakness, or arrhythmias High potassium (hyperkalemia): May cause dangerous heart problems These tests are often part of a basic metabolic panel (BMP) and are important for evaluating kidney function, medications, or fluid imbalances.
